Renewals

Why auto-renewals cost more than rate increases

Rate increases are visible and arguable. Auto-renewals are silent, and they lock in prices from a market that has moved on.

When a carrier raises a rate, you see it on the bill and you can push back. When a contract auto-renews, nothing changes on the bill at all, and that is the problem. Business internet, voice and wireless prices have fallen for years. A contract signed three years ago and renewed by default keeps paying the price of three years ago, for the term of the renewal.

A worked example

Consider a dedicated internet circuit signed in 2023 at a price that was competitive then. By 2026 the same bandwidth from the same carrier is available for substantially less, and from competitors for less again. The contract auto-renews for 36 months because the notice window passed unnoticed. The company now pays the 2023 rate until 2029, and the carrier has no reason to offer the current rate, because the contract is already signed.

Multiply that across every circuit, every phone seat and every wireless line in the company and the number is usually larger than any single rate increase a carrier would dare to send.

Why it keeps happening

  • The notice deadline is weeks before the term end, and only the term end gets written down.
  • The contract was signed by someone who no longer works there.
  • Renewal notices from the carrier arrive by mail or to a generic inbox.
  • Each contract is small enough that nobody owns it, and together they are large enough to matter.

The fix is boring, and it works

Record the notice deadline, not the term end. Put every one on a shared calendar with reminders at 120, 60 and 30 days. Give every contract one named owner. Get a competing quote before each renewal, even when you intend to stay, because the quote is what changes the renewal price. None of this takes special software, though software makes it hard to forget.
